St. Augustine, in the NE corner of Florida, is the oldest continually inhabited city in the United States. Founded in 1565 by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez, it came 21 years before the English settlement at Roanoke Island, VA and 42 years before the settlements of Santa Fe, NM and Jamestown, VA.
The town has done a great job of preserving historic treasures. Several late 19th century mansions and palatial grand hotels still exist, some converted to other use, such as housing parts of Flagler College and museums.

2redhead2 > Flagler College is a four year liberal arts school in St. Augustine, FL. The building, built in about 1901 by Henry Fagler, was originally the elegant Ponce De Leon Hotel. We were told that it was the first building with electric lights and running water (from a holding tank on the roof) in the country.

2redhead2 > This dinning hall of Flagler College, in St. Augustine, FL, is surrounded with Tiffany glass windows on three sides. The tables and chairs are beautiful old rare pieces. Our guide, a senior at the school, said he had never seen, nor heard of, even one case of vandalism or destruction of property at the school. The students respect and appreciate the beautiful and elegant surroundings in which they live and study.
